Settled in the shade of the surrounding trees, not in use for years, but still surviving is McKinley School on the corner of McKinley Road and 37th Street Extension. Named for a former land owner and built in 1884, it replaced a former building built in 1876. The Harmonists were trustees for the construction of both buildings. It closed in December 1930 with teachers Roberta Kirk Eakin and Ruth Baldwin Douthitt in attendance. For nine years former students and teachers have gathered for a picnic in June, recollecting, remembering, story telling and having a good time, holding on to the past where it happened.
